Michael Miklis was the director of the Irish Seed savers Association 1995 until Feb. 2001, now Guardian of the same. His area of special responsibility is the search for Irish Cereals Accessions, their repatriation and conservation. Through this project, based on his Kilkenny farm, 50 cereal varieties of Irish origin have been brought back into the country, propagated, and samples stored in the recently established Irish gene bank. Work is ongoing in locating and propagating more varieties, and collecting information about these varieties. Sufficient amounts of some varieties have now been achieved to allow the provision of samples for trials and farm use
“We need to be conscious of all the environmental, political and economic issues that impinge on agriculture and food production. Do we care where our cornflakes come from? Where is the corn grown? Who does the work and under what conditions? What impact does the processing and transport of them have on the environment? In our day-to-day life we rarely consider such issues -we need to!
